Here are websites relating to English including sites relating to authors, drama, mythology, novels, short stories, poetry, writing skills and more.  They have been collected from book review journals, print resources, librarian/teacher recommendations, and other resources.

GENERAL


LITERATURE COLLECTIONS

  • American Rhetoric  Provides a collection of speeches from famous Americans as well as some movies.
  • Barleby   Here you can have access to a variety of public domain fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and reference free of charge.
  • Early Americas Digital Library   From the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, this site contains electronic texts of writings from 1492 to 1820.  Here you can read journals written by explorers like Christopher Columbus and Samuel Champaign and writings by authors like Edward Taylor and Jonthan Edwards.
  • High School Literature Sites  Compiled by the Mulnomah County Library, this site lists literature related web sites that would suit the needs of a high school student.

VOCABULARY/WORDS

  • Vocabulary University  This site contains activities and games designed to improve vocabulary.  A good resource to help prepare for the SAT or ACT.

  • Humanities Web  A fantastic resource for art, literature, classical music, history, philosophy, and more.
  • Literary Resources on the Net This is a collection of links on American and English literature compiled by Jack Lynch an English professor at Rutgers University.

  • American Writers  From the C-SPAN's television series, American Writers, this site provides biographies on American authors who were featured in the series.
  • Austen.com   Provides links to resources on Jane Austen including her life, her works, her times, and more.
  • Author Webliography   This is an index of web sites on numerous authors hosted by Louisiana State University Libraries.
  • Author Yellow Pages  This database serves as a directory to authors' personal websites, (or "official websites") and to their publishers.
  • Chaucer Pages  Provides information about Chaucer's works, Medival life, and other resources.
  • The Dickens Project  A comprehensive site on Charles Dickens and his works from the University of California.
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald Centenary Home Page  From the University of South Carolina, this site was created in 1996 in celebration of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 100th birthday.  Here you'll find information about his life and his writings.
  • Hemingway Resource Center   This site contains a detailed biography, an interesting FAQ, multimedia section, (where you can hear Hemingway's Nobel Prize acceptance speech), and a bibliography of other Hemingway resources.
  • Poe Museum  This is a great resource for basic information about Edgar Allan Poe and his writings.
  • Thornton Wilder Society   This site is dedicated to the author and dramatist.  You'll find a very good biography about Wilder and information about selected works.  The College of New Jersey hosts this site.
  • Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson   A comprehensive look at the life and works of Ralph Waldo Emerson including a biography, timeline, glossary of frequently used terms, and more.

DRAMA & THEATER


  • Musicals 101  This resource includes hundreds of pages on the history and current development of musical theater.
  • Theatre Database  Explores the history of the theatre from Ancient times to present day.  There's also a Monologue Archive and related links.

DRAMATISTS

  • The Euriphides Home Page  Provides a list of links to resources about Euripides--his biography, his works, criticism, and more.
  • Lorraine Hansberry  Provides a biography of Lorraine Hansberry and a list of links.  There's also a link for information about her play A Raisin in the Sun.
  • The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization  Not only can you find information about Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein III, but also about other dramatists.  Also can read about different musicals and songs from musicals.
  • Sophocles' Oedipus  This is a great guide to Oedipus written by John Porter from the University of Saskatchewan.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

  • Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet   Explore the life and works of William Shakespeare with this resource which includes a timeline, criticism, and links to online editions of his works, information on the globe theatre, and much more.
  • The Shakespeare Question   This site from Princeton Universityexplores the question of who actually wrote Shakespeare's plays.
  • Shakespeare Resource Center   A comprehensive look at Shakespeare including play synopses, history of the Globe, the debate about authorship, and more.

  • Aesop's Fables  Over 655 fables can be found here including biographical information about Aesop.
  • American Folklore  This folklore site contains retellings of American folk tales, Native American myths and legends, Tall Tales, weather folklore and ghost stories from each and every one of the 50 United States.
  • Classical Mythology Directory   This site was designed Dr. Robin Mitchell-Boyask's courses in Classical Mythology at Temple University.  It provides a wealth of information on Greek and Roman mythology.
  • Encyclopedia Mythica  An excellent source on mythology. On this site you can search for articles on gods and goddesses from different cultures.
  • Greek Mythology Today   Designed for school projects, this site has a lot of information on Greek mythology and is written in a humorous style.
  • Mythology Guide Learn about a variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters from Greek and Roman mythology.
  • Mythweb   Contains the Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology.

  • The Historical Novel Society  This society was founded in 1997.  Here you can learn what a historical novel is and read reviews of forthcoming books.
  • Sherlockian.Net   Everything about the infamous detective, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the web can be found here including online editions of the original stories, a biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and more.
  • Teen Reads   This site is full of book reviews, author interviews, and more--just for teens.
  • The Thrilling Detective Web Site   If you love mysteries, you need to take a look at this site. It focuses on the private investigators including famous detectives in books, television programs, and films.

  • American Poems  Read poems and get profiles of American poets past and present.
  • American Verse Project   The University of Michigan has created an online collection of American poetry up to 1920.
  • Poetseers  Wow! There's a lot here to browse. You can read poems and learn about a variety of poets and their works.
  • Poets' Corner   A collection of over 6700 poems from poets all over the world.
  • Representative Poetry On-Line  Over 3000 poems by 500 poets can be found here as well as a glossary of poetic terms, criticism, and a timeline of the history of English poetry. It is hosted by the University of Toronto.

 

POETS

  • Poets of Cambridge, USA   Provides biographical information on poets from Cambridge, Massachusetts area including Henry Adams, Katherine Lee Bates, Robert Frost, Edward Taylor, Henry David Thoreau and more.
  • Poets.org  From the Academy of American Poets, here you can find biographies of hundreds of poets and read thousands of poems.

Grammar

  • Grammar Basics  This is a great resource to help you learn or review the basic elements of grammar.
  • Guide to Grammar and Writing  From the Capital Community College in Hartford Connecticut, this a comprehensive guide that covers parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure, writing a five paragraph essay, and writing a research paper.
  • A Handbook of Rhetorical Devices  From the site: "This [site] contains definitions and examples of more than sixty traditional rhetorical devices, all of which can still be useful today to improve the effectiveness, clarity, and enjoyment of your writing."

 

Writing Papers

  • Duke Libraries Research Guide  An excellent resource on how to do research, evaluate your sources, and writing a research paper without plagiarizing.
  • EasyBib   This is an excellent resource when writing out a Works Cited page.
  • Guide for Writing Research Papers   This is an excellent site that tells you how to write a research paper using in-text documentation and how to write a Works Cited page using MLA format.
  • Owl Handouts   From Perdue University, there are numerous handouts that teachers and students can use to help improve writing skills including brainstorming, grammar, punctuation, spelling, research skills, professional writing, and more.
  • Sources: Their Use and Acknowledgement   Dartmouth College created this site that explains why it is important to cite sources, what plagiarism is, and how to cite sources using the MLA format.
  • Synthesis: Using the Works of Others   The University of Maine at Farmington has this site that discusses plagiarism and how to avoid it.  It also shows how to cite sources using a variety of styles including MLA.
  • Web Search Strategies  Learn how to perform effective web searches with this tutorial created by Debbie Flanagan.

Other

  • High School Journalism  Provides tips for student journalists and resources that can be very useful in putting together a school newspaper.
