  • Fact Monster   From Information Please, this site has an almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, timelines, and a homework center.
  • LibrarySpot.com An excellent portal to some of the Web’s best reference resources, including encyclopedias, maps, quotations, dictionaries, almanacs, calendars, acronyms, and more.
  • Refdesk.com   A detailed almanac with an atomic clock, area codes, encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, calendar, zip codes, and a lot more.

DICTIONARIES

  • Acronym Finder   Get definitions for acroynms, abbreviation, and initialisms.
  • Glossarist  An extensive directory of glossaries and topical dictionaries.
  • Merriam-Webster Online   Here you'll find online editions of the dictionary, thesaurus, and a Spanish-English dictionary.
  • The Phrase Finder   Find out the origins and the meanings behind over 1200 English sayings, phrases, and idioms.
  • RhymeZone  This is an online rhyming dictionary. Just type in a word and you will get rhymes, homophones, synonyms, definitions, and more.
  • Wordsmyth   This site has a dictionary and thesaurus with students in mind.

  • All Area Codes  This is a directory of area codes for the United States and Canada.
  • Fast Facts   A collection of almanacs, facts books, and statistical resources compiled by Gary Price, a librarian and library consultant.
  • Infoplease  An excellent online reference almanac.
  • MapQuest   Get maps and driving directions, (NOTE:  When I use this site for driving directions, I always double check it with a road map or atlas.  It has been known to direct drivers to go the wrong way on a one way street, etc. --Mr. A.).

BIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES

 

  • Biography  From the Biography Channel, over 25,000 individuals are included.  Each person has a brief biography and may include photos and related links.
  • Who2? Get brief biographical information about politicians, actors, scientists, and other famous people living and dead.  Over 2800 biographies can be found here.
  • Women in Congress Profiles the women who have served in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.

SPECIALIZED REFERENCES

  • 20th Century Year by Year   Information Please provides information about every year from 1900 to the present including World Events, U.S. Events, Economics, Sports, Entertainment, Science, and Deaths.
  • Familiar Quotations  This is the 10th edition of the 1919 Familiar Quotation compiled by John Bartlett.  There are more than 11,000 quotations.
  • Measure 4 Measure   From the website:  "A collection of websites on the web that estimate, calculate, evaluate, translate, etc."
  • Online Conversion  Convert temperature, length, area, etc. Also includes fun things like dog years, download time, days to retirement, Body Mass Index...
  • Statistical Resources on the Web   The University of Michigan Library has put together this site where you can find statistical information on a wide variety of topics.
  • Whats On When   Find out what events are going on all over the world.

  • Awesome Library   Contains over 35,000 online resources have been reviewed by educators.  Many topics are covered here.
  • Dewey Browse  Developed by a school librarian, this site organizes sites that are suitable for grades k-21 by Dewey Decimal System.
  • FindArticles.com   Provides free access to over 10,000,000 articles from thousands of periodicals.
  • High School Ace  You will find many interesting things on this site including a reference collection, college information, and subject guides for most of your class subjects.
  • Infography   Professors, librarians, and other scholars recommend the best sources of information about their subjects of expertise.
  • iTools   Provides a variety of search tools all on one site including: Search Tools, Language Tools, Research Tools, Financial Tools, Map Tools, and Internet Tools.
  • Kids Web  A collection of kid-friendly sites in the arts, sciences, social studies, etc.
  • Library in the Sky  An excellent resource of websites for students, teachers, and parents on a variety of topics from the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory  in Portland, Oregon.
