Senior Summer Reading Selections for 2010 |
SUMMER READING IS IMPORTANT
The English Department recognizes the importance of continued reading for personal growth, pleasure, and learning. As a result, the Department has established the Summer Reading Program for all levels of IC students, including the in-coming freshmen. Below is a breakdown for all levels's reading selections and the Summer Reading requirements for that level.

English IV (Regular)
- Read Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
- Expect a quiz on the first full day of class.
A.P. English
- Write a paper for each of the summer readings. ALL papers are due the first day of class.
- Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
- Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw
- Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Theme:
The body of the paper should consist of an analysis of the protagonist’s decisions that lead to the work’s climax, a discussion of the contributing ironic and/or foreshadowing elements, and an illustration of how these elements prove the theme. ALSO compare your findings with ANY work of literature you have studied (e.g. How might Cathy in Wuthering Heights be similar in her actions to Daisy from The Great Gatsby? Give specific examples).
All papers should be double-spaced, written in the third person objective point of view,
and written in the present/present perfect tenses.
ONE POINT will be deducted from the paper for each mechanical error.
